Can Coatings Improve Safety of Packaged Food and Beverages

Can Coatings Market_23Mar21

With the expansion of the food and beverage industry, the demand for can coatings is rising explosively across the world. Due to the surging disposable income of people, the boom in the global population, the rising public awareness about healthy eating habits, and the increasing implementation of stringent government regulations regarding food safety, the food and beverage industry is exhibiting rapid expansion across the world. This is consequently pushing up the demand for can coatings.

This is because can coatings play a major role in various metallic packaging applications in the food and beverage industry, on account of their ability to protect the food items in the cans from various harmful external environmental factors. These coatings act as protective barriers between the food products (inside the can) and the internal surface. Soft drink, flavored milk, mushroom, health drink, meat, and beer are some of the major food and beverage items sold in cans.

Cans are also used for storing, protecting, and extending the shelf lives of paints and aerosol goods. Besides the aforementioned factors, the recyclability of cans is also positively impacting the worldwide demand for can coatings. These are primarily made up of aluminum or steel, which are the two most commonly recycled materials across the globe. Aluminum cans are fully recyclable and their cost of recycling is considerably lower than the cost of extracting aluminum from a bauxite ore.

This is why the demand for the recycling of these cans is exploding, which is subsequently driving the advancement of the global can coatings market. Between interior and exterior, which are the two main types of can coatings, the demand for the former was higher in the past. This was because of the high usage of these coatings for lining the internal surfaces of cans to prevent direct contact between the contents of the can and the can metal.

General line cans, food cans, beverage cans, aerosol cans, and the cans used for packaging pharmaceuticals, customized products, and chemicals are the major application areas of can coatings. Out of these, the requirement for can coatings was observed to be the highest in beverage cans during the last few years. Beverages are generally packed in cans that are lightweight, recyclable, and have good aesthetics and therefore, can coatings are extensively used in beverage cans.

Across the globe, the demand for can coatings will rise rapidly in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region in the coming years, as per the estimates of P&S Intelligence, a market research company based in India. This will be because of the soaring government expenditure on food safety, hygiene, industrial developments, and public health and the expansion of the food and beverages industry in the regional countries such as India, South Korea, and China.

Hence, it is safe to say that the demand for can coatings will skyrocket all over the world in the upcoming years, on account of the growing usage of cans in the food and beverage industry.
